This essay points out that inconsistencies in the assignment of subject headings and call number can lead to failure to retrieve relevant materials from our libraries. Today it is frequently asserted that bibliographic records cataloged by the Library of Congress or other approved libraries will not require review or editing in our local libraries. This paper provides clear, but by no means unique examples of “cataloging failure” and explains the implications of a policy to add unedited bibliographic records (from vendors such as OCLC) to our library catalogs. The result is the omission of otherwise relevant titles from fairly routine searches. continue reading

Accreditation for Library and Information Technology Programs in Canada: A Proposal

Christina Neigel, University of the Fraser Valley, December 2011 (Revised September 2012)

"Library technicians enjoy significant recognition in Canada and, as the expectations forinformation work expand, so does the call for technicians. According to the 8Rs, 38% ofall library paraprofessionals surveyed were technicians. Upon closer examination, 51%of paraprofessionals in special libraries are technicians and 41% in academic librarieswith numbers significantly lower in public and school libraries (27% and 28%,respectively) (Ingles et al, 2005, p. 40). It would be interesting to see further study inthis area as it is quite likely that the workforce composition varies substantially fromregion to region as well...."

"Indeed, the report suggeststhat LIT programs create a formal national venue of interaction in that competencystandards can be identified and discussed. While this analysis also recommended thatCLA regularly maintain the Guidelines for the Education of Library Technicians, there isa false assumption that CLA takes a leadership role on this issue. There exists adisconnect between the Canadian Library Association and LIT programs. Despite thehighlighted recommendation, “That MLIS and LIT educators as well as employers andassociations come together on a regular and formal basis, under the leadership of anational organization such as the Canadian Library Association, to exchange viewpointsand knowledge on the competencies needed and the education/training capacities tomeet these needs” (p. 16), this is currently not done."

Abstract:

This paper reports the results of an exploratory content analysis of academic library position descriptions posted between 2004-2009 in order to determine the degree to which assessment skills are identified as required or preferred qualification for hire, as well as the degree to which assessment responsibilities are noted as components of the positions. It suggests that, despite the increased call for assessment in academic libraries over the past decade, there is little evidence that we are recruiting new professionals into our libraries with a clearly articulated responsibility for designing, implementing, or reporting the results of assessment activities.

The theory of book selection for public libraries Lionel Roy McColvin (it was based on based on demand and value) (1925)

THE THEORY OF BOOK SELECTION
Lionel McColvin's classic The Theory of Book Selection for Public Libraries (1925) begins with thefollowing words:

"Book selection is the first task of librarianship. It precedes all other processes--cataloguing, classification, or administration--and it is the most important. No matter how thorough and efficient the rest of the work may be, the ultimate value of a library depends upon the way in which the stock has been selected." (McColvin 1925, p. 9).

McColvin starts with the need to have available the materials that will be in demand, not only because of the practical need to have in stock what users ask for, but also because there will be no benefit derived from acquisitions that are not used. No demand means no use and, therefore, no benefit, McColvin argues. But he also argues that a passive adapting of collections to demand would betray the mission of the library.

"If, however, we consider the library as a social force with the power to direct to some extent man's demand, (or, to use the usual expression, if we consider the library as an educationalforce) we will not be content to leave demand our only consideration." (p. 37, emphasis in original).

In brief, McColvin provides a frame with two dimensions--Demand and Value--which correspond to the dispensing and advisory roles of collections noted above. (source)

Ps. Given below is the list. Full description of each tool is at the author's site, click here: http://cybrariansweb.com/links/

Incidentally, there is no date, hence not sure if this is a recent list or some of this is already gone with the wind (no pun indeed; just look at how often Google products vanish...). Wish the author could have added one liner to each of these to indicate how libraries (not just librarians as individuals) can use each Tool!!!
Sue Curry Jansen -- "Critical theorist, feminist, and censorship expert Sue Curry Jansen
brings a fresh perspective to contemporary communication inquiry. Jansen
engages two key questions at the heart of a critical politics of
communication: What do we know? And how do we know it? The questions are
not unique to our era, she notes, but our responses to them are our
own. Looking at issues of globalization, science, politics, gender,
social inequality, and other social formations that shape our world,
this insightful book advocates a new agenda not only for communication
research, but also for the writing_and language_that comes out of it."

technology but in incorporating it within the fabric of tradition, so

21st-century students—the instruction, programming, and library services

"This study examines the way in which libraries in Canada approach the issue of the evaluation of international credentials (ICs) held by internationally trained librarians (ITLs) and the eventual short-listing and hiring of such individuals. In the United States and Canada, librarianship, a non-regulated profession, is to a large degree governed by the American Library Association (ALA), but the ALA's statements regarding ICs and ITLs are often ambiguous. It is therefore frequently left to individual libraries to decide how best to deal with ICs and ITLs"

what an anvil is to a blacksmith; but I was disturbed to learn that the
digital editions of these books are only available as monthly rentals,
services that come with expansive data-collecting policies and which
cannot be owned. It's especially ironic that these books are published
by Oxford University, home of the Bodleian, a deposit archive and
library founded in the 14th century, a symbol of the importance of
enduring ownership of books...

France changed their before their Parliament enacted same-sex marriage.
The French dictionary Larousse changed their definition to a “solemn act
between two same-sex or different-sex persons, who decide to establish a
union”.
The Canada Space Dictionary defines marriage as “the state of being a
married couple voluntarily joined for life (or until divorce)”.
However, given the diversity of marriage throughout the world,
wouldn’t it just be simpler to bite the bullet and define it as the
union of two or more people for the conveyance of property, raising of
children, and/or companionship with other individuals?"

Whatever it is called by the librarians (traditional, modern, virtual, etc.), there is chain process, that starts with the user need, need analysis, need negotiation, consulting appropriate sources, customizing search strategy, search, retrieval, evaluation of search results, modification if required, and delivery or suggesting alternative sources...

"Nearly forty years ago now, Shera (1964) not only foresaw the use of computing to take
some of the menial labor out of library reference work, but he also proposed a method for
achieving that goal. Shera wrote that “the really great promise of automation is to be
sought in… the opportunity it affords to analyze the reference process and re-define
reference service” (p. 203). He saw this redefinition as removing the “fetch and carry”
aspects, and the potential to raise the intellectual level of reference work. To achieve this
end, Shera proposed an agenda for action: first, analyze the processes involved in
reference service, and how questions are handled by humans in those processes, and
second, create algorithms to represent these processes. Forty years later, Shera’s agenda
still provides a sound course of action." Jeffrey Pomerantz, Question Types in Digital Reference: An Evaluation of Question Taxonomies.
